ACTii AC7392

1 Purpose and Functions

The ACTii AC7392 PWM regulator with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm is an advanced microprocessor device designed to optimize the process of heating water in standard DHW electric boilers using energy from photovoltaic panels. Solar panels reach maximum efficiency only when working under optimal voltage; connecting a heater directly to the panels causes them to overload, leading to a drastic voltage drop and a significant reduction in generated power. The regulator eliminates this phenomenon by adjusting the load so that the system operates at the MPPT point, which allows for effective water heating even on days with low sunlight.

The device is equipped with an integrated charge buffer, which not only increases system efficiency by approximately 30% but also significantly reduces electromagnetic interference generated by PWM regulation. Thanks to passive cooling based on a large heat sink and an intelligent temperature control system, the regulator ensures long-term and trouble-free operation without the need for noisy fans under standard conditions.

Main features:

  • ✔ Advanced MPPT algorithm optimizing energy intake from PV panels.
  • ✔ Ability to power standard electric DHW boilers.
  • ✔ Precise temperature sensor with thermostat function and the ability to change the set temperature.
  • ✔ Two clear LED displays providing information about temperature, current power, voltage, and peak power.
  • ✔ Built-in charge buffer increasing efficiency by 30% and reducing PWM interference.
  • ✔ Power supply directly from PV panels (no need for external power supplies).
  • ✔ Passive cooling via a large heat sink supported by thermal protection.
  • ✔ RS485 communication port for monitoring operating parameters on a computer.
  • ✔ Built-in acoustic alarm and internal housing temperature control.
  • ✔ Potential-free relay output for notification of heating completion or failure.
  • ✔ Transistors with high power reserve ensuring reliability.
  • ✔ Product manufactured in the European Union.

Interface and Display:

During normal operation, the regulator displays the current power and water temperature. The user can toggle the view to check the voltage from the panels and the stored peak power. A flashing "OUT" LED indicates an active energy transfer process to the heater.

3 Heater Selection and System Configuration

Heater selection principles:

The regulator controls load resistance, so both AC and DC heaters can be used. The key parameter is matching the heater's resistance to the parameters of the photovoltaic panels.

Calculation example (Ohm's Law):

If PV panels generate nominally 140V DC and 7.14A (1000W):

  • Required resistance: 140V / 7.14A = 19.61 Ohm.
  • For a 230V heater: P = U² / R = 230² / 19.61 ≈ 2700W.

Conclusion: For a 1000W panel set with a voltage of 140V, a standard 230V heater with a power of about 2700W should be used.

It is possible to use heaters with two independent coils – one powered by PV panels through the regulator, and the second directly from the 230V grid as a backup source.

4 Operation and Programming Manual

Setting the target temperature:

  1. Press and hold the MENU button until you hear an intermittent beep.
  2. The message "S.tE" will appear on the upper display.
  3. Use the PLUS / MINUS buttons to set the desired water temperature.
  4. Confirm and exit the menu (the device will automatically save the settings).

Start voltage configuration:

The default start voltage is 150V. To change it (recommended only when using an external power supply for the controller via the RJ45 port):

  • Hold the MINUS button until an intermittent buzzer signal appears.
  • Set the new start voltage value.

Turning on and off:

  • Turning off: A short press of the MINUS button cuts off voltage to the heater.
  • Turning on: A short press of the PLUS button restores automatic operation.

Note: After power loss and return, the regulator automatically resumes work if the PV voltage exceeds the minimum value.

5 Safety and Usage Rules

ABSOLUTE SAFETY RULES:

  • WATER HEATERS ONLY: The regulator may only be loaded with resistive heaters used in boilers.
  • PROHIBITED: Do not connect air heaters, motors, electronic devices, or transformers.
  • PHOTOVOLTAICS ONLY: The device is intended exclusively for operation with PV panels. Do not use with wind turbines.
  • HIGH VOLTAGE: Working with voltages up to 350V DC poses a risk to life. Installation should be performed by a person with appropriate electrical qualifications.

Protection systems:

  • Thermal protection: Automatic power limitation or shutdown after exceeding a safe temperature of the heat sink or housing interior.
  • Acoustic alarm: Signaling critical states and errors.
  • Relay output: Potential-free contact informing about reaching the set temperature or actuator failure.
