PWM MPPT Boiler Heater Charging Controller for Solar PV Panels Controller Controller ACTii AC7391

Delivery within 3-4 days.
PWM regulator for heaters with an algorithm for finding the maximum MPPT power point from photovoltaic panels.

The regulator enables powering standard heaters of electric hot water boilers (operating at 230V or 110V AC) from PV solar panels.

The photovoltaic panel works at maximum power only at the optimum voltage. Connecting the heater directly to the photovoltaic panel causes too much load on it and, as a result, a voltage drop. At reduced operating voltage, the panel produces even several times less current than at optimal voltage. The use of a charge regulator eliminates this problem. Even on cloudy days it will be possible to heat water in the boiler.

The regulator is supplemented with a buffer module containing capacitors, choke, diodes, which allows for higher efficiency (up to 30%) and reduction of interference caused by PWM regulation.

The regulator is equipped with a temperature sensor, which allows you to stop heating the boiler above the set temperature.

The device has been equipped with an additional relay output (potential-free) enabling notification of external devices that the water heating has been completed (reaching the set temperature) or that there has been a failure of the device. This output allows you to connect additional devices.

Description

Specification

parameters

Supply voltage: from 11V to 14.4V DC

Panel voltage: from 10V to 400V DC

PV panel current: up to 11A. The regulator has a function that allows you to safely work with PV panels generating higher currents than 11A. If the PV panel generates more than 11A, the controller will supply a maximum of 11A to the heater. In practice, it is extremely rare for a PV panel that generates 13A of current in ideal conditions to exceed 11A (there must be an ideal temperature, perfect insolation and a new PV panel).

Maximum heater power: 2kW

Maximum panel power: 2kW

Current drawn from the power supply without cooling: 0.08 A

Current drawn from the power supply with cooling: 0.23A

Accuracy of temperature measurement 0.1°C

Modes of operation

The regulator has the ability to change the mode to work in the vicinity of the min and max voltage.

First mode:

It is fully automatic and starts working as soon as you plug it in. When the input voltage exceeds the minimum voltage threshold (MINUS button), the controller starts to send current to the heater using the MPPT maximum power point search algorithm.

If the voltage drops below the minimum value, the MPPT search is aborted and the current to the heater stops. Setting the minimum value gives you the ability to freely heat the water and at the same time to charge the batteries.

second mode:

Possibility to set the thresholds of the activation voltage (from which the PWM value begins to increase) and the maximum voltage (from which the duty cycle is 100%), i.e. all the energy of the cells goes directly to the heater.

In addition, the use of this method allows the panels to be held at the MPPT (highest power point).

What heater should I use AC or DC and what power?

Since the only parameter describing the heater is resistance, you can use AC or DC heater.

The heater should be matched to the photovoltaic panels.

If your PV panels give nominal 140V DC 7.14A 1000W, a 140V DC 1000W heater will be most suitable,

but you can also use a 230V AC or 110V AC heater. You only need to match the power of the heater to the PV panels. (we provide an online calculator to calculate the correct heater).

According to the above, (because the only parameter of the heater is its resistance and current intensity), it is possible to adjust the 230V heater to work with PV panels with a different voltage, using Ohm's law. 140V / 7.14A = 19.61 Ohms. Our coil is supposed to be 19.61 Ohm. For 230V heater P=U*U/RP=230*230/19.61=2697W. For 140V 7.14A PV panels, we can therefore use a 230V AC heater with a power of about 2700W.

Other examples:

For 4x 400W PV panel with 36V operating voltage of one PV panel, you can use a standard 220V AC heater with a power of 3 to 3.5kW

For 4x 450W PV panel with 38V operating voltage of one PV panel, you can use a standard 220V AC heater with a power of 3.8 to 4.5kW

For 4x 500W PV panel with 40V operating voltage of one PV panel, you can use a standard 220V AC heater with a power of 3.5 to 4kW

The heaters can have two independent spirals. One spiral can be used to heat water from PV panels and the other from the 230V network.

It is safer to use a single coil heater to connect the controller to the heater.
