Lenses with an Auto-Iris (Automatic Iris) function are essential for cameras operating in locations with highly variable lighting, meaning primarily outdoor cameras.

These lenses have a mechanical iris control that is connected to the camera. The camera, by analyzing the amount of light hitting the sensor, automatically closes or opens the lens iris. This allows for a properly selected exposure to be maintained in all lighting conditions. The image will not be overexposed (in full sun) or too dark (at dusk).

Types of Auto-Iris control:

• DC-Iris: Control is current-based, directly from the camera. This is the most popular standard today.
• Video-Iris: Control is based on the video signal. An older standard, less common.
