Reed Switches Magnetic Sensors

Reliable Door and Window Open Detection

Reed switches, or magnetic sensors, are fundamental and highly effective components of alarm systems. They are used to detect the opening of doors, windows, gates, wickets, or cabinets. Their simple and reliable design makes them a key element of perimeter protection.

How Does a Reed Switch Work?

The sensor consists of two parts: a magnet (mounted on the moving part, e.g., the window sash) and the sensor (mounted on the fixed part, e.g., the frame). When the door is closed, the magnet holds the sensor's contacts in a closed position. Opening the door moves the magnet away, opening the contacts and triggering an alarm.

Types of Reed Switches

  • Surface-mount reed switches: Mounted on the outside of the window/door frame, screwed or glued.
  • Recessed (flush-mount) reed switches: Mounted inside, in pre-drilled holes, making them almost invisible.
  • Gate reed switches: Reinforced, in metal housings, designed for harsh conditions on garage and entry gates.
